I play bass and sing in Luge. Luge is a four-piece band exploring original sounds, through
the instrumentation of bass guitar, piccolo bass guitar (tuned
an octave higher than bass) drums and scrap metal percussion.
The band started as a duo late 2001, I met Drummer Andrew Robins while setting up
for a gig they were playing with other bands (one of which
was Substandard in which Andrew still drums). After
several gigs as a drums/bass/vocals duo we decided
to expand the line-up in order that more possibilities
could be explored. Multi instrumentalist Adrian
Currie (piccolo bass, metal percussion, trumpet, backing vocals)
joined for most of 2002 but sadly moved away to Wellington.
scrap-metal percussionist Mike Fordham and piccolo bassist/vocalist
Andrew Moore were included at the end of 2002.
The aim of Luge is to create interesting and catchy music by
combining bits and pieces from everywhere. I like to
describe it as us playing all the music we like all at once.
The unusual instrumentation makes one huge powerful clanking,
grinding and pulsing rhythm section with vocal harmonys over the top.
The philosophy of the band is to induce people to think while still having a
good time. The emotions of frustration, confusion, humour, and love are the
prime focus of the lyrics. Goths, Dada, Irony and Art are also favourite
subjects of the bands songs.
We has recently completed a half-hour album entitled Delusion EP and we came fourth in Roundup,
the RDU band competition.
